Snow In Cary NC-Maybe the Third Time Will be the Charm

This will be the third time this year the residents prepare for snow in Cary NC- Maybe the Third TIme Will be the Charm.  While the rest of the country is growing weary of the winter snowfall it still remains an event here in Cary, NC.  The weather is predicting significant accumullation in the Triangle.  The Town of Cary sent out a blast email to resident:

CARY’S A-TEAM PREPARED FOR WINTRY WEATHER
Brining operations underway

CARY, NC With weather forecasters calling for the possibility of a snowy weekend, the Town of Cary’s A-Team is fully prepared should wintry weather affect the Cary community. Roads and bridges are being brined today through Friday; plows and spreaders are fully equipped and loaded; and Snow Command will be fully operational at 5 p.m. on Friday unless changing conditions warrant different action....

Northerns new to the Cary area may find the precautions of the county official a bit absurd, but their is precedence.
You see in January, 2005 right before rush hour about 4:00 pm 1" of snow fell on the cold roads and quickly iced over.  Days before the weather had been unseasonable cold and the snow froze to the streets. Southerners not used to driving on the icy roads created gridlock.  Motorist spent hours stranded on the highways.  Children were forced to sleep over night in their schools instead of chancing the bus drive home.

2005 Ice StormJanuary 2005 Raleigh Area Ice Storm

In the aftermath of that storm county official became proactive.  They now pre-treat the roads with a brine solution.  This solution is a mix of salt and water and is sprayed on the bridges, highways, and main roads prior to frozen precipitation.

The tricky part for Cary officials is getting the brine solution on the roads ahead of frozen precipitation while avoiding rain.

You may have also noticed another phenomenon in Cary NC that takes place prior to winter weather.
Bread and milk disappear from store shelves.  Today was no exception.

Time to curl up with a good book and a warm cup of coffee and wait for the next snow prediction.

How interesting!  As a native New Hampshireite, it always amazes me how such a little bit of snow can paralyze communities.  On the other hand, southern communities don't have the equipment or resources to deal with winter conditions, and drivers don't have the experience.  Even northerners know that it doesn't matter how good a driver you are...icy roads are dangerous.  I'd much rather drive in a foot of snow than an ice-covered road.  Good luck and have fun in the snow!

Linda...Those of us who live in areas that receive alot of wintery weather can't help but be amused at your situation.   It is not funny for people who are not accustomed to driving is such conditions.  Sounds like Carey officials have a plan and are ready to implement it.  Having bread and milk fly off of shelves happens here as well when the forecast is for heavy weather.  Stay warm and safe!

Coming from the Pacific Northwest (the snowy side), it's amazing how this area handles a little snow!  Well, it's over and we survived... and so glad the kids go back to school today.
