Cary NC Renovating the Staircase - Hardwood or Paint? That is the question my husband and I posed.
We bought a 20 year old home on the golf course with an amazing view. The rest of the house definitely needed some updating. 
We originally decided to retread the staircase with hardwoods and wrought iron railings.
Until we saw our neighbor's stairs. Paint? We never considered it.
I ran home and ripped the carpet off the first stair and it was real wood, not sub flooring.
We were on our way!
The steps we took:
By painting instead of installing hardwood treads and wrought iron railing we saved $ thousands $. Yeah, more funds for the rest of the renovations.

- Removed carpet and padding
- Removed nails and staples
- Patched holes and nicks with wood fill
- Sanded
- Repeated steps 3 and 4 more times than we wanted to count.
- Painted
- Touched up
- Applied Polyurethane
